Happiness Is…Bald and Wrinkled Aliens….#SoundtrackSunday

Standard

This week is easy, for me because it’s all about happiness. When I scan my life for the happiest of happy memories, there are three that stick out a million times beyond the rest. Oddly enough, they are some of the most bloody, painful, and confusing times of my life and resulted in the introduction to a bald, wrinkled alien life form into my life. Yes, I’m talking about becoming a mother and for me (someone who NEVER wanted children), it was a wild and crazy ride indeed.

Note: Shortly after each one of my children were born, I selected a song for them. These songs, to me, represent their individual spirits in the rawest forms. One thing about being a mother that no-one ever tells you is the ways in which you KNOW your child. You know their soul on a deeper level than anything you’ve ever experienced before and (for me, at least) this “knowing” occurs before they ever walked or talked…before the world molds them into individual beings. I think that knowing their offspring’s raw spirit helps a mother realize their child’s potential. It’s the reason that mothers will fight against a world that tells them their children “cannot” do something and motivates them to hold their children up, even in their weakest moments…Anyway, these songs are the songs that solidify the moment of birth and of “knowing” for me. They are my children’s spirit songs. Whatever they become, I will always remember who they really are…I will always see their beautiful spirits.

My son was born 6 weeks early. My water had broken  on Friday afternoon but the ER told me it wasn’t broken and sent me home. It wasn’t until I followed up with the doctor that Monday that they confirmed my water had actually been broken and they sent me in to be induced. I was terrified, being a first time mother, and exclaimed that I still have 6 weeks left, I hadn’t attended my parenting class yet, and nothing was ready. It didn’t matter, Rymi was on his way to meet me and in the wee hours of the next morning, he came into my world, and changed everything about me.

From the moment he was born, he was a very sensitive and overactive child. He was colicy, particular (due, in part, to the rampat spoiling), and he didn’t sleep for the first 6 months of his life. Still, everyone was drawn to him (they still are) and EVERYONE loves him. I have watched him grow into a talented comedian and he is the happiest when he’s the center of attention. He’s still high strung and hyperactive. I guess he always will be but he will be popular and loved.

He’s 4 now and what he wants to do when he grows up is “make monster makeup”. I can see him in Hollywood one day, whether it’s behind the scenes or on the stage. He’s just that kind of person. Sometimes I worry that he’ll have problems staying grounded. I’m worried that he’ll forget about the simple things in life…I’m worried that he’ll lose himself in his own character and find himself unable to be aware and thankful for the simplest, most fulfilling aspects of life. So, this is his song. Because, at the end of the day, I know my mission as a mother is to “ground” him…keep him centered. I know my mission is to help him become a Simple Man (well, maybe just a simpler man)

My pregnancy with the girls had been a long, hard road. I was in the hospital for a week before their arrival and although I was glad to know exactly WHEN they were coming, my body was tired from Preeclampsia and months of bedrest. With them, it was a C-Section and the doctors had warned me that they may not cry immediately. It felt unnatural to be bringing my daughters into the world this way and the dual teams of nurses in the room only made the experience more terrifying.

I was lying on the table, half alive, when I heard the screams of my little “baby a”. I was delighted that she came out, screaming and I knew that everything was going to be alright. This was a good indication for what Kaya’s personality was going to be. She is the most calm of all my children. She is as steady as the stream but as strong as stone. She is nurturing and protective…she’s my mother earth baby.

Of course, this song relates to her because it is her namesake but it’s the peaceful, rhythmic reggae music that reminds me of her spirit. There are times when things are chaotic and Kaya finds a way to soothe me. Kaya literally means “enlightenment” and, of all my children, I know that she’ll be the wisest and strongest. She’ll probably be the one who needs me the least but this makes being her mother even more challenging. I know I’ll have to recognize her needs, because she’ll never bring them to me willingly. I know that I’ll have to break through her stone barrier and make her allow me to support her for once. I will have to help her soften to the world and realize that it’s okay NOT to be the one who takes care of everyone else. I will have to help her understand that it’s okay for her to take care of herself from time to time.

September 11, 2010 12:30 PM

Kaylin came into the world, a minute later and 3x louder than her sister had a minute previous. She had a rough go of it, at first. Although there has never been more than 1/2 difference in hers and her sister’s weight, she seems so much smaller than her older sister. She’s certainly much more soft than her.

But she’s a DIVA! Since the moment she was born, she has put herself in direct competition with her sister and is always trying to “out-do” every other child she meets. She’s also very finicky. Even as a newborn, she had very strong preferences and a equally strong voice which she used to voice her opinions. There is no such thing as convincing this child that she cannot wear her princess dress to the store or sleep in a tu-tu.

She’s so girly, in juxtaposition to both her sister and myself, and from the time she could walk she would put her purse on her arm and priss around the room. She cannot sit in the buggy in the clothing ilse and she’s more inclined to shoes than baby dolls. She is my little queen.

My challenge with her is going to be helping her understand that she is not her sister’s subset…she is an individual and she’s amazing for it. I want her to know that she’s “beautiful in her way because god makes no mistakes”.

Happiness Is…

Don’t worry too much about choosing the “right” or “popular” song; just choose a song that you really connect with…after all, it’s your life and your soundtrack…have fun with it!

If you don’t want to explain your connection with the song, don’t. The writing isn’t a requirement, it’s a suggestion. In the end, it’s up to you whether you want to really elaborate on it or not.

Bloodstained Lives…Interview and Playlist with Ronald Griffin

Standard

I have been jamming out to the playlist for Bloodstained Lives all week (see below) and I am really pumped to do this week’s interview. Ronald Griffin is one of the authors that was featured a few weeks back for the Charity Blog Hop and his novel, Bloodstained Lives, is one of the most innovative and exciting stories of its kind to date. Check out the Book, Interview, and (of course) the playlist below…

Interview With the Author

You released your debut novel, Bloodstained Lives, at the end of last year. What was your Facebook-20140117-064748inspiration for it?

Blood Stained Lives was actually based off of a short story I wrote years ago. One day I just decided to rewrite it and expand it. So I added in many more characters, a better plot, and several entertaining parts to it.

What sets Bloodstained Lives apart from other stories in this genre?

I would think it would be the broad range of characters and creatures that are in it. Creatures that would normally be bad guys can be good guys, and even some creatures that you don’t really read or hear that much about anymore. Plus there is a little bit of history to the characters as well. Each one has their important role in the book and you will find yourself being attached to each of them in one way or another.

Stories about Vampires and Werewolves aren’t always scary these days. How would you rate Bloodstained Lives’ horror factor?

Blood Stained Lives is more action, drama, and comedy than horror.

I know that you feel like you have been pulled toward writing horror and paranormal novels since you were young. Was there a particular influence for this? Were you hiding under the covers and reading Stephen King novels at a young age, like I was?

Lol actually I was more into the Stephen King movies. Silver Bullet was my favorite and I think that was the one that sparked my interest in werewolves. I have always loved wolves but when you add the supernatural factor in it. That always makes it more interesting to me.

I love that you maintain a blog mini-series for your novels. Have you also been working on a sequel novel?

Yes I am currently writing the second story titled Blood Stained Deception which I have aimed at an august release. Along with the second book though I plan on taking the entire blog mini series and putting it in a book as a collection to sell along with the other two books. I am giving a little bit more back story to characters in the first book with the series, as well as introducing new characters that will be in the second one. One for instance is the bad mouth short tempered pixie Jewel. I just posted her story recently on my mini series blog site. She also comes across everyone’s favorite little gremlin as well in that story.

Finally, give our readers a good farewell. What is it the last thing that you want people to know about you and your work?

I would rather not say farewell because I want everyone to be with me through this journey every step of the way. So instead of farewell, I will say see you next story and keep an eye out for my short stories.

Cailleach the Diviner Character Sketch…Blog Hop For Writers

Standard

blog-hop-for-writers

Character Sketch of my Hero

Cailleach isn’t the MC of Darkness Within but he is very central to the story (he’s also my favorite character). He is Awen’s spirit guide and protector and his back story intertwines with her story in ways not yet revealed so I thought he would be the perfect subject for this week’s Blog Hop for Writer’s post. The exercise is to do a character sketch of my hero so, here it goes! When you’re done, hop on over to Ruth L. Snyder’s blog and check out her character sketch.

Appearance

Cailleach (Cai) is a formless being. In fact, he’s an extension of the divine and so there are times when he appears in the story as nothing more than a shadow in the corner of a room or (as Awen describes), the whisper of the wind. We see him, most often, in the Shadow Realm where he takes the form of a dark owl with silver tufts of fur and bright, purple eyes. Awen compares his physical appearance to the glow of the moon and describes him as appearing to be of both darkness and light.

Origin

I cannot tell you who I am, for I have been known by many names. I cannot tell you an age because human years cannot equate to my antiquity. I can say that, within the scope of human understanding, I have always existed. In one form or another, I have walked the shores of the human realm for ages. I have lived and died by the sides of man. I have felt human love and hate; hopelessness and triumph; joy and sorrow. I understand what it means to be human. I even empathize with them but I am not human. –Cailleach

Cailleach has existed from the beginning of earthly time. He was created to act as an agent of fate for the divine. He exists as a being who was created to fold into the fabric of human experience without actually being human. He travels throughout the ages, weaving in and out of human lives and helping guide them toward their individual destinies. All this is so that the overall balance of the world is maintained and humans continue to progress.

Back Story

Through his role as a diviner, Cailleach came to stand in awe of humanity as he watched them evolve. His attachment to humanity eventually became a weakness for him and throughout a turn of events, he became responsible for the beginning of the Dark Ages. He had broken every law of his kind and so he was exiled to the Shadow Realm where he found light in the darkness and became the protector of wanderers in the forest. His isolation and tenacity made him the perfect candidate to be Awen’s protector. His past is both a strength and a weakness for him. Protecting Awen will be his redemption with is a great motivator but as she grows, he becomes very attached to her and he finds himself feeling like history is repeating itself.

***I’m super sad because this post was supposed to be scheduled for Monday but due to technical issues, it didn’t post when it was supposed to. Better late than never, right? I hope it still counts.

Love Songs for the Future Divorcee…#Valentine #SoundtrackSunday

Standard

SountrackSundayValentines

My experiences in relationships hasn’t given me much cause to sing the praises of love. As it turns out, the hopelessly romantic aren’t great when it comes to recognizing flaws in would-be partners or determining compatibility. So, I have found myself in more than enough toxic and unstable relationships. These types of relationships can only lead to breakups, or (in my most recent one) divorce.

Sitting on the edge of a failed marriage and an impending divorce, you could understand how I might not be in the mood to “share the love” this Valentine’s Day. I’m warning you now, if you’re all hopped up on boxed chocolates, this may not be the post for you. There will be no singing birds and blooming flowers…only the melancholy of a bitter future divorcee.

My Marriage

The less I say the better but if I had to choose one song to explain the dynamic in my marriage, it would be “One Week” by the Barenaked Ladies. It’s a whimsical outlook on a dysfunctioning relationship. For a while, our arguments were “cute” and even enduring. However, after 3 children and thousands of “disagreements”, the novelty wore off and I learned how much is lost when two people stay in a relationship that is dysfunctioning.

Through the Divorce

Breaking up is never as quick and painless as we want it to be. When it’s five years, three children and a legally binding marriage certificate, I’m finding that the “pulling back” factor is amplified. Maybe it’s because there was such a large dynamic of the push and pull in our marriage…maybe it’s because it’s bittersweet to be breaking ties with someone who was once your everything…maybe it’s because it’s because my idealistic brain still clings to the idea of a happy ending. At the end of the day, I remember the reasons why we are better people apart…this is the song that reminds me of that and keeps me grounded in my “weaker” moments.

In the End

“I guess I just lost my husband…I don’t know where he went…I’m going to drink my money…I’m not going to pay his rent”

There comes a point in every breakup, separation or divorce that you just have to put your head up and own it. That’s where I am right now. I hear all the whispers behind my back…I know that there is a camp of people forming who have issue with the fact that I walked out on my marriage. It’s almost that I’m less of a woman because I have a mind of my own and I have the power to walk out on a situation that wasn’t healthy…To those people, I say “So What”…Until you have walked a mile in my shoes, you can never understand how much I fought for my marriage…you can never understand my reasons for leaving and quite frankly, I’m tired of explaining them.

Soundtrack Sunday Week 3: Love Songs…#ValentinesDay

Standard

SountrackSundayValentinesIt’s Week 3 and Valentine’s Day is upon us! Fittingly, this week is all about love.

Good or bad, every love life has an anthem. This week, share the anthem(s) of your love life with us as we prepare for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday. It’s pretty straight forward so I don’t think any “tips” are really necessary. I will remind you that you can use more than one song if you need to, to show us the ups and downs throughout your love life or you can stick to one song that really speaks of your love life “right now”. You can take whatever route you want to with this: share your “sexy” songs, the songs that remind you of your first love or even share a breakup song.

Also, I know it’s a bit early to start doing stuff for Valentine’s Day but if I do it next week, it will be after the holiday. Somehow, that doesn’t feel right and maybe this little “exercise” will help you get into the “groove” ; ) of the holiday spirit. You can use one of the “special” buttons for Valentines or stick with the “old faithful” buttons. I will include them all in this post.

If you’re new, get started by checking out the main challenge page here.

Lastly, if you have any questions about the blog challenge or feel you can contribute to it, in any way, email me at acwilliswriting@gmail.com.

Hey there, A.C.! Thanks for having me on your blog today! I had to literally shovel my way here. The Northeast has been getting slammed with snow these past few weeks! I work for a pet food company and I’m always making jokes about how we should have a dog sled team available to bring us into work when the weather gets like this

So anyway! Enough about the weather!

I have a new book out right now called, Lights Out. It’s a thriller novel, one that took me a looooooong time to finally submit to my publishing company, Black Opal Books. It’s been through so many revisions, so many re-writes and I can’t even tell you how many times I wanted to set it on fire. But something always stopped me, always drew me back to it. It ended up being like my go-to story when I was stuck with writer’s block on something else.

Lights Out is a dark, twisted story. I will be first to admit it. I grew up watching scary movies (Aliens, Hellraiser, The Exocist, you know all those classics) and reading scary books (Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Del James and Robert McCammon) so a part of me isn’t too surprised by the content of the book. Of course, there’s another part of me that truly wonders about my state of mind especially when, upon finishing Lights Out, my mom and my sister had a little pow-wow and asked each other,

“What’s wrong with her?”

Her being me.

I thought it was a compliment. I still think it is. The story wasn’t what they were expecting. That’s the reaction every writer wants, I think. But during the course of writing the story, I asked myself that question over and over again. And you know what?

I’m still not sure of the answer.

Lights Out Excerpt

They had to get out of there—and fast—but he couldn’t see a thing…

Jesus, it was dark.
It was disorienting in its completeness, in its total lack of light. In his lifetime, Paul had had his sight temporarily taken from him many times. Mostly by people who didn’t want to be looked at or identified if—God forbid—something went wrong. But there had always been some degree of light leaking through the blindfold or a shift in someone’s hand that was clamped tightly over his eyes, or the loose weaves in a rut-sack that was tied around his head. He’d always been able to see something.

This, however, was like the deepest part of the ocean. This was like having his eyes glued shut. This was what it meant to be blind.

The air grew colder and with that came the struggle to breathe. He didn’t know if it was claustrophobia but it came pretty damn close. His chest hurt and his throat felt like someone was cramming cotton into his mouth. He tried to breathe more slowly, to at least calm the thundering in his rib cage, but the darkness around him fed the panic that was skating through his bones. The stones beneath his fingers were wet in some places and icy in others and, under his feet, things crunched and squeaked like he was stepping through snow and ice.

He hoped it was snow and ice.

Echoes came from all sides of him. It was impossible to decipher one sound from the next. He wondered if people who heard voices were anything like this. Just one gigantic ball of murmuring sounds and words that didn’t make any sense.

There was a scraping sound behind him.

“Strong women..magick…and lust…everything a woman needs to invoke her inner goddess”

Let’s get this out of the way, this novella looses a few points because of a typos and poor sentence structure in a few spots. With that being said, once the story got going, my heart was racing so fast and I was so enthralled in the story that I just didn’t care about the previous mistakes.

This is a great little story and I am a sucker for a strong, witchy woman and a great office fantasy. Shoshana manages to mix magick and consumer culture to create a seductive tension that is palpable in this short, but very worth the read, story. This is a great introduction for what is to come for Bast and I can’t wait to pick up the next installment.

Coven of the Courtesan Banner 450 x 169

This week, we are spicing things up, as Yolanda Soshana stops by to talk about sex magick and introduce us to her sexy novella; “Coven of the Courtesan”.

Sex Magick with Yolanda Shoshana

A big thanks for having me and Coven of the Courtesan on your blog today! I am here to drop a bit of love, sex, and magick.

Coven of the Courtesan follows a coven of witches in New York that bring back the art and magick of the courtesans. Many people thought of courtesans as witches because they were so seductive and charming. One thing that the courtesans are known for is their passionate sex lives. Let’s talk about about sex magick shall we….

Sex magick also known as “sacred sex”, works with the divine to use your power to create a desired result during sex. It is something that one has to experience versus just read about to get the full effect. Sex magick is found in every religion in various forms. The goal is love, harmony, and bliss. There are those who agree that sacred sex is a lifestyle choice that can open up creativity, manifest what the heart desires, create open and fulfilling relationships as well as heal things within us.

One way that you can begin to experience sex magick is to add tantra to your life. Tantra actually has little to do with sex. It’s teachings are about everyday life including the body, which is where the myth of it being mainly about sex comes from. Think of it as slowing down, awakening the senses and living in the moment to become more complete. It is a way of life that values sex and the life force originating from the same place. You can practice tantra with or without a partner.

The other way to experience sex magick is by awakening your kundalini energy. This energy is a spiritual energy that comes from the base of the spine. To tap into this energy explore more spiritually and add meditation to the mix. It is an energy that few people experience because it stays dormant until it is called upon. When this energy is open, a person experiences, bliss, spiritual awareness, and unlimited love by the universe, which in turn makes for an amazing sex life. Take a kundalini yoga class to get your spiritual juices flowing.

You deserve amazing love which includes amazing sex. Having great sex does not start in the bedroom. The best way to experience sex on a deeper level is through your own self awareness, spirituality and healing. May you have many orgasmic experiences and read Coven of the Courtesan.

Intrigued yet? Yeah, me too. Keep reading to learn more about Yolonda and “The Court of the Courtesan” and to find out exactly where you can find both the author and the book. Then, skip on over to my review page and check out my own review of her novella.

About the Book

ftowcover

They said it couldn’t happen here—but it did!
Water resources have become scarce and individual freedoms cast off. A society has been brought to its knees by a series of FIPA agreements. Economic ruin, contaminated watersheds, earthquakes and human relationships paint the picture of a Canadian society that has been altered, seemingly irrevocably.

Those international accords effectively brought the Canadian government to collapse and ruin—forced into dependency on corporatist rule. Unrestricted fracking and irresponsible mining practices caused major watersheds and underground streams to become contaminated, the precious fluid, noxious.

The sole purpose of The Coalition, a regulatory body created by the world-wide conglomerates that governs the country, is to ensure the profitability of its corporate members.

In Yukon, Canada’s far north, a baker’s dozen of unknown, everyday people and one dog are loosely thrown together in an effort to combat The Coalition and its impact on Canadian lives and the environment. Though small in numbers, their resolve is immense … and palpable.

The representatives of The Coalition vie for power and status while attempting to maintain control of the populace. Their numbers include those who would dispose of the others and some who, in spite of themselves, find love.

The Yukoners include a married couple, young singles and elders. The action-filled scenes are interspersed with tender moments and imaginative solutions while relationships bloom within their ranks. Together they confront the corporate menace.

Join Landon, Nora, Galen and the others who, through no design of their own, have become the unwitting hope for Canada’s future.

The year is 2036 …

It is always exciting for a writer to take on a political, social or environmental issue in their work. Norm Hamilton does, just this, as he chronicles the struggles of the people of the Yukon against “The Agreement”—a contract that allows Chinese businesses to extract natural resources from Canada without regulation–and “The Coalition”—the group of people who protect this right.

Although it may seem to be a cautionary tale for the dangers of destroying the environment, there is much more to it than that. Hamilton highlights what “could” be the downfalls of society if “lust for money” becomes a motivation for people and countries to destroy themselves in pursuit of a fat checkbook and a prominent seat in the world market.

What is more important is that “From Thine Own Well” accomplishes all this while still being a really great story. It’s never slow, never boring and doesn’t at all feel “preachy” to me. All in all, I think this is a really great addition to the Dystopian genre and would recommend it to anybody who enjoyed reading “The Giver”.
